Deafblind Awareness Month was celebrated in June. Due to circumstances, I only participated in a virtual panel facilitating a topic on “Advocacy Fatigue” and “”In Our Own Hands: Deafblind Experience”. The presentation was geared towards the CNIB, CNIB Deafblind Community Services (DBCS) and VLRC (Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada) staff. This session provided insight to the work Deafblind British Columbians has to advocate to the provincial government in seeking sustainable, permanent funding for intervenor services. Intervenors provide communication and transportation needs for the Deafblind individual to fully participate in society.
July is a time to celebrate Disability Pride. A time to recognize and celebrate the the intersectional identities, rights and today’s contributions within society. As an ally, I support individuals by providing awareness and breaking down barriers and challenging people’s ablelistic attitudes. I acknowledge and share the diverse cultures and the community as a whole. This weekend, I’ll be attending our Pride festivities and look forward to connecting and learning within the community.
I will resume sharing of articles, interesting events I facilitate or participate in, and other ongoing topics in September. Please stay safe and have a lovely summer… Emergency / Disaster Management professionals — remember to “breathe” and do “self-care” during this tumultous summer of fire and flood response.
