Welcome to Fall! It has been a whirlwind September and October!
After a restful summer, it was time to dive into schooling and resume committee activities. Due to personal events, I did not accept presentation requests in September.
In October, I was invited to present to a class at Thompson Rivers University on the needs of the deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, visually-impaired and Deafblind population communication before, during and after wildfires.
As a person with a disability, during Disability Employment Month, my role is to educate others of the capabilities of persons with disabilities. Seeking employment has huge challenges and barriers to overcome; in particular, as a person with deafblindness. Even with transferable skills after volunteering and working with the same organization for more than 15 years, it can be laborious to find positions that aligns my skill set. If you are a hiring manager, keep an open mind when finding the best candidate for the role you are filling.
As we move into November and into the holiday season, remember to review your winter kits to ensure you are ready for any winter storms or roadblocks if you need to travel by car.
